Why do we observe Labour Day in Canada?

Labour Day as a National holiday was inspired by the efforts of Canadian trade unions throughout the labour movement to improve workers' rights.
The labour movement in Canada traces back to 1872 to the Toronto Printers Union that lobbied employers for a shorter work week. Since then, battles have been fought tirelessly for all workers for rights such as safe work environments, minimum wage, overtime pay, vacation pay, maternity/paternity leave and protection from harassment and discrimination. The strides made from these battles can be seen every day within our contracts, work environments, and lives.
Today, we celebrate the work of the labour movement and honour the efforts of modern trade unions that work hard to protect the rights of workers, and continue to fight for improved work conditions.
